Hong Kong has the second highest carbon footprint per capita than any country worldwide. Beef consumption in Hong Kong is one of the highest in the world. Given these two facts, something must be done for the environment. Green Monday is responding to the call by taking the meat off food menus every Monday. The idea is that if everyone in Hong Kong gives up eating meat one day a week, it would equal to taking 86,000 cars off the road.
The business model for Green Monday is similar to Table For Two. They partner with food-related organizations across different sectors, including restaurants, universities, corporations, and non-profit organizations to establish the Green Monday program. They call this a simple method to reduce carbon footprint.
Yet Green Monday is not alone. Similar initiatives around the world have been going meatless on Mondays too.
Green Monday is a project of Social Ventures Hong Kong, an organization providing financial and non-financial support to Hong Kong social enterprises.
